Unusual French Hussar sabre, circa mid 1700. Curved 36 inches blade with shallow central fuller and narrow back edge fuller. Engraved on one side with the figure of mounted Hussar, crescent moons, compass star and panoply of arms. On the reverse, mounted Hussar, Turk's head, stars, moons and Sun-in-splendor (Luis XVI ?). Unusual steel hilt with demi-lune guard engraved with a Sun-in-splendor; knucklebow; down-curving quillon; single outboard branch extending from center of guard to pommel; faqceted ovoid pommel and one-piece steel grip. Overall length: 42 inches.
great condition for its age. Grey metal showing scattered light pitting, the blade with some nicks to the edge.
