DESCRIPTION: Very nice US Model 1822 flintlock musket. Caliber:  .69 smoothbore.  The musket was manufactured in 1837, as indicated by a date stamped on the barrel tang. The lockplate, trigger guard and the barrel display an abbreviation, "J.A.R.". The same markings, "J.A.R." are beautifully engraved in Italic on the counter plate (please, see pictures). No other markings are stamped on the musket. The musket is similar to US Model 1816, but with some modifications. These muskets, manufactured by several contractors, were identical to the Model 1822 muskets produced by the National Armories at Springfield and Harpers Ferry. Some were furnished to the War Department under federal contract, while others were supplied to state militias, or offered for private sale. The musket features a tilted brass pan on the lockplate. Three barrel band configuration. Two sling swivels. All iron furniture. Brass front sight blade on the nosecap. Socket bayonet lug on the barrel, near the muzzle. Walnut stock. Complete with a ramrod. CONDITION: Excellent, all original condition. The flintlock mechanism functions perfectly, and will spark the frizzen and open it, as it should. Correct, polished steel finish on all the metal parts, mixed with scattered patina. No pitting. All the markings are clearly visible on metal. Very nice stock in original finish with some handling marks and light scratches. Two small hairline cracks on the right side of the stock, near the lockplate (one on each side, please, see pictures).
