French percussion cavalry pistol M.1822 T Bis ("M 1822 T bis construit neuf"). Caliber: 17.1 mm. The pistol was originally manufactured in percussion configuration, and was not converted from a flintlock. Rifled barrel. The ramrod is missing. The pistol displays many interesting markings. The lockplate displays maker's markings, "M-re Imp-le de St. Etienne", and "B" (in a diamond). The barrel tang shows following markings, "M-le 1822 Bis". The back of the barrel displays following markings, "C de 17-7 N" , "15", "B" (in a circle), "F" (in a circle), "S 1861", "M1" and some other unrecognizable markings. The counter plate and all other brass parts has correct French proof marks in oval. The left side of the stock shows a nice maker's cartouche with following markings, "B St. Etienne 1862 M1". There are some other fading stamps on the stock. Complete with lanyard ring. Many pistols of this type were imported to the USA during the Civil War. CONDITION: Fine. Correct, polished metal finish with some gray patina. Some scattered light pitting on the barrel. Lock works fine. Nice, solid stock with some handling marks and small dings. There is a small hairline crack in the left/upper part of the stock, just above the upper counter screw (please, see pictures). Fine+ bore. The percussion nipple is in excellent condition. All the markings on brass, steel and wood are still, at least partially, visible. Nice example of French cavalry percussion pistol! (Ref. "French Military Weapons 1717-1938", by James E. Hicks, pp. 81 and 94).
